Established in 1997, Bloomington, Indiana based AuthorHouse is the world's leading publisher of print on demand (POD) and electronic books (ebooks) by contemporary authors, with more than 6,000 titles in its catalog, and 200+ new books added each month.
Timothy E. Jacobs and H. David Hilliard founded AuthorHouse in 1997. Mr. Jacobs was a financial services executive and an author, who was frustrated by his inability to get his books placed with a conventional publishing house, in spite of their good quality. Mr. Hilliard was the owner of a company that published alumni directories for educational, fraternal and professional institutions across North America, with more than 30 years of experience in traditional publishing.
Jacobs and Hilliard decided to start their own publishing firm -- but not a conventional one. Instead of selling printed books, they decided to harness the power and worldwide scope of the Internet to distribute electronic books or "e-Books." E-Books are not physical objects made of paper and ink, but full-length books that can be downloaded as digital data files from the Internet directly to the computers of readers around the world.
In February of 2001, AuthorHouse reported that it is the only profitable company operating in the print-on-demand and e-book space, and that it is on track to generate more than $10,000,000 in revenue. The company accepted more than 600 title submissions in January of this year. Constituting a 320% increase in titles from January 2000, January 2001 marks the company's most successful month since its inception in 1997.
